From 1920 until 1973, The Durant Hotel was one of Michigan’s premier hotels. Named after GM Founder and Flint Native William C. Durant, the hotel became a symbol of Flint’s prominence and success. People from around the world came to Flint to do business, vacation and just be seen there. The Durant was a true Michigan icon but after hard economic times sat in ruin for years. Thanks to developers Richard Karp and Kevin Prater, this important part of Flint’s heritage is back in business.
The building is now contemporary urban loft apartments and retail space, and it’s thriving. What they’ve done with the Durant is nothing short of spectacular. It’s been restored to its original grandeur and sits again as a cornerstone of progress and renewal in Flint. If you want to see an important part of Flint’s past and future, check out the Durant.
