The first one we tried was The Brass Café. Emma Currie and Susan Paton are the proud proprietors of this fine establishment, and you’ll never find two people more passionate about what they serve or where they live. Emma came all the way from Scotland to study at CMU. Soon after that she met Susan, fell in love with Michigan and decided to find the American dream. And as far as I’m concerned, they both found it with this place.
The food at the café is exceptional. Emma and Susan have gone out of their way to develop relationships with local farmers, bakers and suppliers, so almost everything you eat is sourced locally. Just down the street from the restaurant, they even opened the Market on Main, which is a great little specialty grocery store, deli and bakery. It’s just another sign of their continued commitment to downtown Mount Pleasant.
I ate a specialty hamburger they serve called “The Big Brassy.” It’s handmade with locally grown organic ground beef and stuffed with gorgonzola, mascarpone and fresh mozzarella on a paprika-oil-brushed local bakery bun with baby arugula, pancetta, house-smoked grilled onions, their patented A-128 sauce and a fried Amish egg on top, with hand-cut Kennebec fries and mayo. Need I say more?
At the Brass Café it went way beyond their food. We really enjoyed the honest approach they take toward everything they do. We had a great time. Made some new friends, and as always, ate way too much, But, hey… we take our job seriously.
