Now I’ve been to Frankenmuth before, but what was totally under my radar is that they have a huge festival there every January that literally turns snow into a show. It’s called Zehnder’s Snowfest, and it’s been going on for more than twenty years now. Boy, where have I been?
Everybody knows that if you want an authentic German-style chicken dinner, Frankenmuth is THE place in Michigan to go. What I didn’t know was that teams from all over the world go there to compete in a massive snow-carving competition that you just have to see to believe.
Talented teams from the Netherlands, Mexico, Russia, China and even Morocco fly in to compete in this crazy, cool competition. You won’t just see Frosty the Snowman at this event. These incredible artists carve full-size oxen, giant eagles and complete landscapes out of twenty-foot-high compressed blocks of snow. One inventive team actually carved an entire life-size rock band performing on stage. They carved the people, amplifiers, guitars, drums and even the guitar strings. Mind blowing!
