Now, if you like restaurants that are scary good, have we got a place for you. It may be a ways out of town, but once you make the drive, believe me, you’ll make it again. It’s a genuine gourmet restaurant in the middle of nowhere called Shari at the Willard Hillton, and it’s full of great food, fun folks and even a friendly ghost.
Chef Shari Rae Smith is the heart and soul of this eclectic eatery, and even though she studied culinary arts in California and New York, she came back to make her mark in Michigan. Almost a quarter century later, she has created a restaurant that is getting national attention. Shari describes herself as a “world chef” who sources local, cooks seasonal and serves from the heart. She has also assembled a knowledgeable and passionate staff that really understands the magnificence of a great meal.
This place also has both an illustrious and infamous history. Built in the 1800s, it’s been a hotel, a bar, a general store, and yes, even a suspected brothel. As for the friendly ghost who resides there, many patrons and staff claim to have seen her. They all describe Sadie the same way (yes, her name is Sadie): petite with long red hair and a flowing white gown. I thought I saw her at table six, but it was just a nice lady from Flint.
Next time you’re looking for somewhere incredible to eat, try the middle of nowhere at Shari at the Willard Hillton.
