Located on 2nd Street just west of Main, Second Street Sub Shop is a funky little place that claims to have the world’s best subs. As far as we know, Second Street also holds the title of Royal Oak’s smallest restaurant, with seating for only eight. Owner Scott Perry hand-picks all his ingredients; there are no bulk food service deliveries happening there. The place has a ton of character, and Scott is a bit of a character himself.
When Scott’s not entertaining his regulars with witty barbs and thoughtful banter, he’s making colossal subs with hand-picked, local ingredients. To make sure he gets the best of the best, Scott gets his meats from nine different places, including Detroit’s Eastern Market. He even goes all the way to Dearborn to get his bread from a hundred-year-old, family-owned Italian bakery. There’s a real sense of community in his subs.
I got to make a sub with Scott, and I have to tell you, after watching the master at work, I was pretty intimidated. Scott was extremely patient and an absolute blast. No matter how you slice it, Second Street Sub Shop is a great place for a quality meal. Just make sure you bring your appetite and your sense of humor.
