While we were in Escanaba, we also had the chance to visit a place that’s been making candy longer than Willy Wonka. Mike Kobasic and his family have been making great candy at Sayklly’s since before there was TV, household refrigerators and even me.
In 1906, Joseph Sayklly, a young Lebanese immigrant, came to this country to pursue the American Dream. He settled in Escanaba, opened a small grocery store, started making and selling homemade candies and the rest is history. Three generations later, Sayklly’s Candies is still using old-country recipes to make candies that are now an Upper Peninsula tradition that’s known around the world.
Making candy is something I always thought was done by machines, but I quickly discovered that a lot of the good stuff is actually made by hand. So you know me, I had to try my hand at it. After a couple hours of rolling, pouring, mixing, dipping and of course taste testing, I almost got the hang of it. Well, at least I got pretty good at the tasting part.
I promise you won’t be buying any of the candy I made, that stuff we ate before we even left town, and I can also promise that if you like candy, you’ll love Sayklly’s. Not only was their candy wonderful, they were the sweetest people I’ve met in a long time. Pun intended!
