If you’re just like me and you’ve heard of Legs Inn your whole life and never been there, well, you’re just like me. But now that I’ve been there, we’re just a little bit different.
The historic Legs Inn is literally like something you’d see in a fairy tale, but a fairytale where they serve great Polish food and Michigan draft beers… bonus! It’s stone on the outside, hand-crafted wood on the inside and probably one of the coolest places you’ll ever walk into. The inn is located at the end of the tunnel of trees drive in Cross Village, once a thriving fishing and lumber town.
George and Kathy Smolak, along with their two sons Mark and Chris, make up two of the four generations who continue to care for this great Michigan landmark. George’s Uncle Stanley, who was born in 1887, emigrated from Poland and built Legs Inn. Now people go there from around the world to see the incredible wood carvings inside. It’s called Legs Inn because of the inverted stove legs Stanley decided to use on the roof in the front of the building. Wonderfully weird!
Legs Inn is so much more than just a great restaurant; it’s a pure Michigan destination. People who go there describe it as a unique museum, art gallery and monument to nature. If you’re lucky enough to get a table out on the patio, the views of the sunset over Lake Michigan are breathtaking. Great atmosphere, great food, great beer, all smothered in Smolak hospitality.
