On our program you hear me talk a lot about how communities and neighborhoods have a great sense of place. Sometimes it’s tough to explain exactly what that is. So in order to feel it for myself, I went to the Lansing City Market where all kinds of people come to gather, connect, shop and share. If you’re looking for local Lansing, look no further. This market really does have everything. It’s got great prepared foods, a cool bar to hang out at, live music to enjoy, tons of Michigan specialty products and plenty of fresh local produce.
Markets like this really are an important place to build community. In the old days, we used to sit out on our front porches and greet each other, but we don’t do that so much anymore. At the Lansing City market, you get to rub elbows with fellow Lansing locals and actually meet the people who grow and make your food. The montage of people and personalities at the market totally makes this trip worth taking.
The sights and sounds of the market were intoxicating, so the guys and I wandered off to take it all in. We ended up at a place called Sarge’s Soups and Sandwiches for a pulled pork sandwich. Sarge was a blast and his sandwiches were so good, I almost dropped and gave him twenty.
So if you’re scratching your head, trying to figure out what the phrase “sense of place” means, the place to go that will put you in the know is the Lansing City Market. If Lansing is a little too far, try your own city market if you’ve got one. If you don’t have one, start one and give me a call when it’s done.
