As we drove out of Marquette that day, we stumbled onto something the likes of which we’d never seen before. It’s called Lakenenland, and it’s just east of Marquette on M-28. This is a whimsical and wonderfully bizarre place that’s great for the entire family. From the small to the very huge, every sculpture in the park was constructed from machine pieces and industrial scrapyard junk. The word “junk” is kind of misleading though, because these creations are amazing.
Here’s the best part. It’s a drive-through art exhibit that’s absolutely free to the public. It is without a doubt one of the most unique places I’ve ever been. Tom Lakenen is the inventive and talented artist who’s made some of the coolest and strangest artistic things imaginable. Some of the art is funny, some of it is very strange and some of it is absolutely huge.
If you’re ever anywhere near Marquette in the U.P., you really have to experience Lakenenland. There’s nothing else like it anywhere. It’s hard to miss because of the thirty-foot-tall green dinosaur fishing in the little pond right out front.
