Lagniappe is an awesome Creole, Cajun eatery, and when you step inside you won’t believe your eyes. It’s like you were instantly teleported to Bourbon Street in New Orleans. This place is the real deal because of Chef Don Durley. He’s a master chef who fell in love with Louisiana cooking and brought it all the way up to the U.P. for you and me. Everyone has the same reaction when they walk in the front door. Wow! And they have the exact same reaction when they taste the food. From the Gumbo and Jambalaya to the Alligator Bites and Red Beans and Rice, it’s all made with Don’s own blend of Louisiana love.
Chef Don said that the first time he cooked Cajun, it felt second nature to him. He loves it because of its incredible array of rich flavors and because of the great history and culture connected to it. It’s a uniquely American cuisine that’s custom made for foodies who live to eat. Chef Don also explained that a lot of people avoid Cajun cooking because they think it’s all spicy hot. Nothing could be further from the truth. ‘Flavor’ is what it’s full of. You can get it hot if you want, but that’s totally up to you.
When we were there Chef Don filled us up with incredible food, amazing stories and a real appreciation for what he’s accomplished. He also poured us an adult beverage called a “Cat 5 Hurricane.” I knew it was strong when the umbrella on top came pre-crumpled. Don’s daughter Nicole is now helping to create more incredible Creole masterpieces, so expect good things from Lagniappe. If you do go, check out the voodoo shrine behind the bar.
