Episode 105: Traverse City, Port Austin

“Shut your Pie Hole”

Story Behind the Name
Challenge accepted. Tom and a junior crew member really went at it in a pie-eating contest. The crew member proved he had a bigger mouth than Tom by crushing him in the pie-eating contest. But if you watch the show at all, you know that when it comes to a big mouth contest… Tom takes first place every time.

Traverse City

Traverse City is consistently listed in the top ten for best beach community, best food town and best wine destination. AOL Travel News even named it one of the top ten coolest cities in the United States. TC is definitely one of the most beautiful places in Michigan. The wineries are exceptional, the boating is the best and downtown has tons to offer. There’s every kind of shop imaginable and tons of incredible restaurants that serve the great wines that are produced in Michigan. But wine isn’t the only fun liquid that’s made in Traverse City.

Port Austin

Before I got to Port Austin, my complete knowledge of the town was, “I think it’s somewhere up in the thumb on Lake Huron.” Well, I was in for a huge surprise with the cool people, places and things I found there. The town is small enough to get to know in a day, but it’s nice enough to make you want to stay. If you like living on the water, this is your town. Everyone was friendly, and it’s a great family destination. A lot of the beautiful and historic buildings have become really cool inns and very nice restaurants.

In one visit, Port Austin went from being totally off my radar to being one of my new favorite places in Michigan. The day I got home I even made plans to go right back up kayaking with my kids. Port Austin was simply awesome!
