This time in Grand Rapids, we dropped anchor at a place called City Flats. It’s an ultra modern, extremely progressive and very green boutique hotel that’s right in the heart of the city. Believe me, you’ll look cool just walking into this place.
If you’re looking for an eco-friendly hotel, City Flats is one of the best you’ll find anywhere in the world. It was designed to achieve LEED Gold Certification and features twenty-eight conceptually unique guest rooms.
Even though every room is a little bit different, they all help the environment by using cork flooring, black-out curtains to reduce energy use, naturally hypo-allergenic bamboo linens, large windows or architectural light wells to maximize natural lighting, high-efficiency heating and cooling units with occupancy sensors and low-flow faucets and toilets using thirty percent less water than standard fixtures. This place is lean, green and a great place to be seen!
Another neat thing about City Flats is that they’re also helping preserve one of Grand Rapids’ great historical treasures. After restoring and renovating the historic Michigan National Bank lobby right next door, they turned it into an incredibly classic ballroom. In a couple steps you can go from a hip and ultra modern green hotel to a historically preserved iconic environment, and it works.
So if you’re cool and progressive, you might want to stay at the City Flats Hotel. If you’re not, don’t worry about it. Even I got a little cooler after staying there, and for me that’s hard to do!
