We knew this part of Michigan was the cherry capital of the world, so we decided to visit Cherry Republic, a cottage industry in Glen Arbor that reinvents the cherry every single day. They do everything you can think of with cherries, and even some things you haven’t thought of yet. From cherry wines, sauces, candies, pastries, jams, jellies and you name it, it’s all there. From sweet to sour to savory and spicy, this is a cherry lover’s bonanza.
If it has anything to do with cherries, founder Bob Sutherland is probably already working on it. Bob came from humble beginnings. He started it all back in college when he came up with a plan to make extra money. He printed up some t-shirts that summed up how he felt about this beautiful place where he lived. The shirts simply said, “Life, Liberty, Beaches & Pie.” After selling over 3,500 of them, he thought, “Hey, I’ve got something here.”
Now, five expansions later and a fan base of millions, Cherry Republic has become a destination location for cherry lovers around the world. When you’re there, it almost feels like a little oasis with beautiful gardens, patios and cozy places to enjoy your cherry treats. After growing up and raising his family there, Bob put it best when he simply said, “I’m the luckiest guy in the world.”
If you like cherries and you live in Michigan, consider yourself one lucky son of a… shut your mouth! I’m talkin’ ’bout Cherry Republic. We can dig it!
