There aren’t too many places in this world where you can get a million dollar view for a buck, but just north of downtown St. Ignace, we found one. It’s called Castle Rock, and it’s a local landmark that you can actually climb to the top. It’s good exercise, great family fun, the views are incredible and, yes, it’s only a dollar.
This huge rocky outcropping has been in Mark Eby’s family for generations. His grandfather Clarence bought it back in 1929, put in a bunch of steps to the top and it’s been a great U.P. tradition ever since. It takes no time at all to get up top, and the views are spectacular. You can see from the mighty towers of the Mackinac Bridge to the great northern wilderness of the U.P.
Warning: at the bottom of Castle Rock is a huge gift shop that’s so full of awesome kid stuff, you might be staying a bit longer than expected. There are more cool travel trinkets in this shop than you can shake a rubber tomahawk at. Me? I bought my fair share and had a blast!
Castle Rock totally rocked!
