Episode 202: Harbor Country, Kalamazoo

“Donuts and Coffee”

Story Behind the Name
Vegan donuts and locally roasted coffee. Sometimes it’s that simple.

Harbor Country

Harbor Country is a collection of eight small towns located along the shores of Lake Michigan in extreme southwest lower Michigan. From north to south, they are: Sawyer, Harbert, Lakeside, Union Pier, bustling New Buffalo, Grand Beach, Michiana, and a little farther inland, Three Oaks. Just don’t ask me to name the Seven Dwarfs!

Harbor Country is virtually unknown to most people in Michigan, which is why vacationers from other states spend so much time there. They even play a game there called, “Find the Michigan license plate.” It’s true; even though you’re in Michigan, you see plates from every other state but ours. The area was even voted one of the best weekend getaways in the Midwest and has also been called the Riviera of Lake Michigan.

When you’re exploring Harbor Country, the main road you drive is the historic Red Arrow Highway. It was named after some brave men from this area who fought in WWI. The Red Arrow runs north and south and takes you past beautiful scenery, funky little art shops and of course (you know us) some great restaurants. Yes!

After dinner we continued south on the Red Arrow Highway to the town of Lakeside, and by the time we got there, the shadows were getting long and our collective attention span was getting pretty short. So we found an exceptional place to stay.

The next morning, we woke rested, refreshed and ready for another action-packed day of exploring Michigan’s Harbor Country. But first, we needed a good, hearty breakfast. So, you know us. We went for ice cream.

We had a great time on Michigan’s Harbor Country. You should definitely go, so you’ll be one of the few Michigan people who know about it.

Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo is another college town that’s alive with renewal, progress and a ton of great reasons to go there. Between Kalamazoo College and Western
Michigan University, over 25,000 young people totally energize this community. And the city’s mix of modern and classic is perfect. Every time I go to Kalamazoo, I’m reminded how comfortable, cool and eclectic the city is.
