On this trip, we turned left as soon as we crossed the Mackinac Bridge and drove one hour west on U.S. Route 2 to the little town of Naubinway. That’s where we found one of the coolest places ever. It’s the Top of the Lake Snowmobile Museum and it’s run by Charlie Vallier and his wife Marilyn. When it comes to the history of this sport, I don’t think anyone is nicer or knows more than these two. The museum just moved into a brand new facility that has tons more space, and they’ve got some of the wildest and rarest snowmobiles you find anywhere.

What really struck me about some of the vintage snowmobiles is the great sense of art and design that went into making them. They were almost more form than function, and I swear, if you look closely, some of them actually have a personality.

Honestly, even if you’re not a snowmobiler, the Top of The Lake Snowmobile Museum in Naubinway is a fascinating way to spend the afternoon. Besides, then you get to say you’ve been to Naubinway in the U.P. How cool is that?
