What do you call it when you beautify a city, preserve history and give people with special needs a wonderful new place to live? In Kalamazoo they call it The Rickman House. Let’s face it, some folks in our world just need a little extra help, and at The Rickman House, people with special needs are given a place to live with both dignity and a great sense of place in their community.

The Rickman House is an iconic, century-old eight-story building that has been renovated into efficiency apartments for low-income adults who have special needs. Support staff is on site twenty-four hours a day, and residents pay no more than thirty percent of their income. This wonderful building helps support so many of the people society tends to either forget about or simply turn its back on.

I was lucky enough to spend some quality time with some of the residents at The Rickman House. Not only did they tell me some great old stories about the neighborhood, they also told me how touched they were that people cared enough about them to give them this wonderful, beautiful and safe place to live.

It’s times like these that really make you appreciate the human spirit and what people are willing to do for each other. The Rickman House is right downtown, nice to look at and the right thing to do for these special people. Every town should have a Rickman House!
