Next, we stumbled onto probably our biggest surprise in Monroe. If you’ve ever been to the hip boutique hotels of New York or L.A., you’ll feel right at home at The Hotel Sterling. Ken Wickenheiser put everything he learned from his travels around the world into this hotel, and it’s honestly one of the coolest places I’ve stayed at in a long time. Every room is cool, elegantly funky and completely unique.

The hotel is made up of three 150-year-old buildings that were renovated, connected and modernized. They were updated but still have a hip, rough and rustic feel about them. Because of the differing layouts of the buildings, every room has its own shape, personality and individual atmosphere. The entire experience at the Sterling is very metropolitan and proves that you don’t have to be in a big city to stay big city.
