One of our Facebook friends told me about Public Pool in Hamtramck. So I thought, what better way to end our day than with a refreshing swim? Well, it didn’t take me long to figure out I wouldn’t need that new swim cap I bought. Turns out Public Pool is a massively hip place where local artists of all kinds can come and express themselves. You’ll see everything from musical performances and the spoken word to experimental interactive art displays. It’s a place that gives expression and creative energy to the community.

The evening we were there the exhibits were all about mankind’s relationship with the automobile and its influence on the human condition. Nine local artists came together to express their interpretation of that relationship. The exhibits were fascinating, thought provoking and extremely creative.

Then, to drive the event home (pun intended), artist Chip Flynn put together a crazy demolition derby in the streets of Hamtramck, the likes of which I’ve never seen before. It was a wonderfully bizarre experience featuring robotic fiberglass cars and a wild and crazy robot. The crowd loved it.

If you get the chance, I highly recommend you immerse yourself in art at Public Pool. Just remember, you won’t need that swim cap.
