What do France, the West Indies and Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula all have in common? Guillaume Hazaël-Massieux is the owner and chef at La Becasse, an intimate restaurant in Maple City that serves what he likes to call authentic French country cuisine.

Guillaume grew up in France eating the honest and rustic country foods his mother would prepare. After being bit by that illusive culinary bug, he became classically trained, spent time sharpening his palate in the West Indies and is now loving living in the Leelanau Peninsula. As he so eloquently put it, “The wonderful people, beautiful surroundings and the rich agricultural environment make it the perfect place to be.”

As is with all enlightened chefs, Guillaume sources locally and creates seasonally. He also goes out of his way to help you match the perfect local wine to go with your meal. The atmosphere is quaint, casual and sophisticated and the food is simply awesome.

Guillaume and I have two out of three very important things in common: we’ve both been around the world, we both call Michigan our home… but this guy? He can cook!
