Speaking of visiting, when you do, check out the historic Doherty Hotel. It’s been the cornerstone of Clare since 1924 and it’s right smack dab in the middle of town. A J Doherty’s grandfather built this great hotel in hopes they would come, and thanks to Michigan Highways 27 and 10, they sure did. Now three generations work together to keep the tradition alive and well.

My favorite part of the hotel is the Leprechaun Lounge just off the main lobby. Legend has it that an artist from Saginaw came to the hotel many years ago in need of a place to stay. In exchange for room and board, the artist offered to paint a mural that would wrap around the entire lounge depicting Leprechauns. Five months later he finished and was on his way. The mural is wonderfully weird and fun to study.

If you’re looking for a place with great neighborhoods, good schools, a beautiful downtown and fun stuff to do, I have just one thing to declare… oh, I already said it… Clare!
