Next we jumped in the car and headed across town to an event I just had to go to. It had been ‘on’ my radar for years, but for some reason, I’d just never made it there. The National Cherry Festival in Traverse City attracts over half a million people every year. It’s been going strong since 1926, it’s all about cherries and there’s tons of fun stuff to do there.

Traverse City is the Cherry Capital of the World, so every year the entire town gets together and celebrates all things cherry. From cherry pies and candies to cherry wines and even cherry Bar-B-Q sauce, if you can make it with cherries, it’s there and it’s good. The festival also features food from tons of local restaurants and live entertainment, and it’s more kid friendly fun than you can shake a cherry popsicle at. I even entered a cherry pie eating contest. I lost miserably, but who cares? I got a free piece of cherry pie. Bonus!

If you like cherries and good family fun, all wrapped up on one of Michigan’s most beautiful bays, check out the National Cherry Festival. It’s a slice of pure Michigan life.
