If you’re looking for a welcoming place where you can rub elbows with the people of Southwest Detroit that’s also a real melting pot of coffee, I think we found your new hangout. Café con Leche is the place where hip Southwest Detroiters come to relax, dream, think and share ideas, all with a bite to eat and a great cup of coffee.

Giordi Carbonell came all the way from Barcelona, Spain to start a new life in Detroit, and he brought his sense of community with him. He told me he loves this part of Detroit because it reminds him of home. He loves the “city feeling” and how people from all walks walk into his café and instantly fit in. Students, professionals, princes and paupers all come together to share a cup of coffee and their connection to this great neighborhood.

Giordi serves a simple selection of Spanish and Latin American foods, and the walls are adorned with brilliant local art. It’s the kind of cosmopolitan place where you feel like you’re in any number of countries around the world. I may not know how to order food in different languages, but I do know that Café con Leche speaks the language of Southwest Detroit.

As for the name Café con Leche, it simply means “coffee with milk.”
