Justin Rashid and his business partner Larry Forgione started American Spoon back in 1981, and it’s been a sweet ride ever since. Larry and Justin shared a dream to produce the finest fruit preserves in the world from Michigan fruit. Larry developed the original recipes, Justin selected varieties of Michigan fruit and as the French say, viola. American Spoon was born.
It all started when Justin (a wild-food forager) had a friend in New York (Larry) who was looking to become the great American chef. He wanted to use all American ingredients, so Justin started sending him morel mushrooms. When Larry asked, “What else do you have back there in Michigan?” Justin brought him to Michigan. Larry saw the tremendous agricultural resources, put down roots in Petoskey and the partnership was born. After deciding to concentrate on making jam, American Spoon came to be, and now they ship their incredible spreadables around the world.
The company credo is, “Make the best preserves in America using Michigan fruit,” and that’s exactly what they’re doing. From humble beginnings to a fruitful enterprise, you’ll taste a mouthful of Michigan with every American Spoon.
